Description
This image was inspired by old Greek mosaics and a design in some medieval German fabric I saw once in an art book. The two figures in the fabric design were very linear and parallel. I made my own version with one of Michael's wings twisted up and the dragon's tail curling towards his head to get a more circular design. I also added wings to the dragon which are similar to those on the archangel as a reminder that the dragon is not unrelated. He was once an archangel. This is a traditional image of the struggle between good and evil. The censer, in the same hand as the spear, symbolizes the way in which evil is defeated-- not by an actual material spear but by prayer. Incense rising (in liturgical services, for instance) is an image of prayers rising to God.
This image was first created as a paper mosaic using very tiny "tiles" cut from old magazine pages and glued to a found wooden board with Elmer's glue. A layer of clear nail polish gave my mosaic a lovely shine. I have it on my wall still. A scan of the mosaic was digitally enhanced and texture added and that is the image you see here.

This is so good, Sarah. Medieval, down to the mosaic.
Sarah Loft replied:
Thank you, Ross! It's one of the very earliest collages I produced (ca 1979) and it was busy work to do in the chem lab when I had to be there for mindless stuff like doing titrations every 20 minutes.
