Description
Bromeliads. Epiphytic bromeliads (spikey leaves, family Bromeliaceae) growing on a tree in a tropical cloud forest. The Bromeliaceae family contains over 3000 described species; some grow attached to another plant (epiphytes) whereas others are terrestrial. Epiphytic bromeliads depend on the host tree for support, whilst water and nutrients are absorbed through the leaves. The most well-known bromeliad is the pineapple (Ananas comosus). Photographed in the Molinuco nature reserve, Ecuador.
