Description
After flowing through the Gibbston Valley, just East of Queenstown, the Kawarau River winds through a steep, narrow gorge before entering Lake Dunstan at Cromwell. The narrow valley was the site of extensive gold-mining in the 1800’s. The gorge once supported a small town with two pubs, a school and a post office. All that is gone but the remains of mining claims can be seen on the Southern side of the river. What relics remain are today a museum and historic site. Though not even 20 kilometres long, the towering cliffs and rugged hillsides provide some of the most spectacular scenery in Central Otago. And in Autumn, it is even more spectacular when the willows and poplars that line the banks of the turquoise river fill the narrow gorge with another type of gold.
