Gypsum crystals. Gypsum, hydrated calcium sulphate (formula: CaSO4.2H2O), is a major rock-forming mineral that is mostly created by precipitation from saline waters. The colourless form is called selenite. Another form, alabaster, is used as an ornamental carving stone. Gypsum is used extensively in plaster for the building trade. This specimen is from Mexico.
