Odyssey In Black Introduces Women Artists

"Mary Edmonia Lewis, Laura Wheeler Waring, Ann Washington Derry, Elizabeth Catlett, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, Minnie May Evans, Lois Mailou Jones, Joyce Owens, Tamara Natalie Madden, Iona Rozeal Brown and Amy Sherald. The names of these 12 black American women artists were introduced to the audience at the March 14 lecture “Odyssey in Black.” Most, if not all, names were new to the attendees. Docent Adrienne O’Hare gave a brief description of each artist plus samples of their unique subject, style, media and era when the work was done."

Joyce Owens was invited to participate in Visions of Our 44th President, a collective sculptural show created to recognize and celebrate the historical significance of the first African American President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. Forty-four Contemporary African American Artists, renowned and emerging, are participating in the avant-garde art collaboration that opened at the Wright Museum of African American Art in Detroit in Oct. 2012 until August 2013 and will travel. Two Plus Two = Jackson, Owens, Williams, and Wheatley Celebrate Black History Month by viewing an expansive range of art from four Chicago-based artists at Oakton’s Koehnline Museum of Art. Two Plus Two = Jackson, Owens, Williams, and Wheatley, running from February 2 – March 23, will feature works by Preston Jackson, Joyce Owens, Bernard Williams, and Rhonda Wheatley. Jackson, professor of sculpture at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, examines the nation’s past through depictions of well-known individuals. Owens, curator of the Galleries Program at Chicago State University, challenges the public to “look beyond the masks – the many faces we all wear” through her art.
